EPI initiates Wero in Luxembourg, bringing instant pan-European payments to local consumers
September 1, 2026

As Payconiq becomes Wero, EPI unveils Luxembourg’s first results from its 3rd edition of its European Payment Barometer.
Brussels/Luxembourg City, 2 September 2026 - European Payments Initiative (EPI) has announced the final phase of the migration from Payconiq to Wero in Luxembourg, marking Wero’s entry into its fourth European market, via its Wero app.
Throughout September, Wero will become progressively available to Luxembourg consumers and merchants, as participating banks, payment service providers and other organisations across the Luxembourg payments ecosystem move through the different phases of the migration. Payconiq’s payment platform will end on 30 September 2026. To ensure a smooth transition, existing Payconiq QR codes on invoices and instore will remain usable until the end of the year and can be scanned directly through the Wero app. This interoperability is a key part of the migration, enabling consumers to transition naturally from Payconiq to Wero.
Revealed today, Luxembourg is now included in EPI’s 2026 European Payment Barometer. EPI’s annual survey, conducted by Kantar, tracks consumers’ payment habits, expectations and attitudes across Wero’s five European markets. Findings in Luxembourg illustrate the country’s readiness for Wero with 74% of Luxembourg consumers already using mobile payment apps for person-to-person payments- the highest level across the five markets surveyed – while 88% of respondents say they will use Wero (1). Together, these insights point to a highly digital and receptive market as Payconiq progressively transitions to Wero.
Wero is EPI's pan-European instant payment solution and wallet, enabling fast, secure, and seamless account-to-account transfers, designed in Europe, for Europeans. This migration marks another major milestone in Wero's pan-European rollout, reinforcing EPI's mission to build a sovereign, continent-wide payment ecosystem. Today, Wero serves 58 million users and is already available in Belgium, France, Germany and soon in the Netherlands and Austria.
The Luxembourg migration represents an important step in Wero’s European development: an established local payment solution, with an already wide variety of use cases, is progressively transitioning to Wero. Payconiq users will still enjoy the person-to-person (P2P) payments and payments to professionals to invoices, e-commerce and in-store payments they are used to, and now will benefit from Wero’s cross-border payments and upcoming added-values services such as subscription, payment-at-delivery, one-click payments and further upcoming features such as in-store, contactless payments that will also be introduced alongside QR-code payments.
Reflecting Luxembourg’s unique position at the heart of Europe and its highly international population, Wero will be available in Luxembourg through the Wero app, which will be available in Luxembourg app stores from 1st of September 2026 and in most European app stores from 7 September 2026. This broad availability will enable residents, expatriates and cross-border workers to easily access and adopt Wero.
Beyond domestic payments, Wero will allow users to make seamless cross-border payments and online purchases across participating Wero markets, enabling them to use the same Wero app beyond Luxembourg’s borders and supporting Wero’s vision of a simple, secure and truly European payment experience.
The deployment being effective to customers of BIL (Banque Internationale à Luxembourg), BGL BNP Paribas, Banque Raiffeisen, POST Luxembourg and Spuerkeess. It also builds on the strong relationship between Luxembourg consumers and their banks as 80% say they trust their bank (1) when it comes to payments, providing a strong foundation for Wero’s adoption.
The launch of Wero in Luxembourg is another important step in building a truly European payment solution. We are delighted to partner with BIL (Banque Internationale à Luxembourg), BGL BNP Paribas, Banque Raiffeisen, POST Luxembourg and Spuerkeess to bring Wero to consumers in Luxembourg. Together, we are making instant, secure and seamless account-to-account payments more accessible while strengthening Europe's payments strategic autonomy and offering users a payment experience designed in and for Europe.
Committed for many years to the transformation of payments, BNP Paribas Group is proud to be a founding member of the EPI. As such, we are currently supporting the rollout of Wero in Luxembourg for our retail and professional clients. More than just a payment tool, Wero embodies a triple commitment: absolute simplicity, enhanced security, and European independence.
At BIL, our digital strategy is centred on a simple objective: making banking and payments as easy and accessible as possible for our clients. We are continuously enriching our digital ecosystem with innovative services that fit naturally into their daily lives. The introduction of Wero represents an important step in this journey, complementing the payment solutions already available to our clients and reinforcing our commitment to delivering a seamless, modern and digital banking experience.
Wero is more than just a payment innovation. It is a new way for POST Finance to continue fulfilling the mission it has carried for more than 110 years: making financial services and payment solutions accessible to everyone.
Wero brings innovation to payments; banks bring trust. In Luxembourg, that trust is earned over time, through long-term client relationships and a deep understanding of their needs. Wero combines the best of both: an intuitive European payment solution backed by trusted financial institutions.
The arrival of Wero in Luxembourg marks an important milestone in the evolution of European payments. By combining simplicity, security and innovation, Wero offers customers a seamless payment experience while contributing to the development of a stronger and more connected European payments ecosystem. Spuerkeess is proud to be part of this journey and look forward to supporting the adoption of a payment solution designed in Europe, for Europe.
Wero’s European reach will extend further through EPI’s interoperability agreements with other European payment solutions, connecting Wero users over time with payment ecosystems in Italy, Spain, Portugal and the Nordic countries.
