ING Germany expands Wero to include online payments
- Expanding beyond peer-to-peer payments
- Activation rate: over 600,000 ING customers use Wero
- Simplified onboarding through integration with current account terms and conditions
Frankfurt am Main, 03 June 2026 – From now on, ING customers can also pay with Wero in e-commerce at participating online retailers. The bank is thus expanding its offering, which until now focused on peer-to-peer payments, to include another key use case.
Wero has been integrated into the ING app since August 2025 and enables real-time transfers from account to account. With the activation for online retail, Wero will now become another payment option in online payment transactions. Customers can initiate payments directly from their current account without intermediary wallets or international payment service providers.
Wero is a service of the European Payment Initiative (EPI), supported by 16 leading European banks and payment service providers. The aim is to establish an independent European payment infrastructure. Transactions take place within ten seconds, and the transaction is fully subject to European data protection and regulatory standards. Customer data remains with the respective banks and is not passed on to third-party providers.
Customers can already pay with Wero when shopping online at Eventim, among other places. With IKEA Germany and the Lidl online shop, the European payment system will soon gain additional strong partners. This will make it possible in the future to pay for purchases of daily needs easily and directly online with Wero. Other retailers are to follow.
Wero is a central part of our current account for us, because it gives our customers freedom of choice in daily payment transactions," says Burcu Civelek Yüce, Head of Private Individuals at ING in Germany. "Currently, a good 600,000 of our customers are have already activated Wero for payments in the private sector. That is around 15 percent of our current account holders – which means that we have one of the highest activation rates in the German market. The possibility of being able to pay online with it in the future will significantly increase acceptance.
We are very pleased with the acceleration of our go-to-market approach among consumers and merchants in Germany, and the launch of merchant payments by ING Germany is a perfect example of this. Following the successful launch of Wero for person-to-person payments last year, ING now enables online purchases in Germany and, since March, in Belgium. In a few months, EPI will introduce the same use case in France. At the same time, the national solutions in Luxembourg and the Netherlands will be migrated to Wero. Our ambition to offer all Europeans an alternative in payments is becoming more of a reality every day.
In addition to the new feature, ING has simplified the onboarding process to make it easier for new customers to access Wero. The product terms and conditions for Wero have been integrated into the general terms and conditions (GTCs) for current accounts, so that consent to the use of Wero is automatically granted when opening an account. This significantly accelerates activation.
The next step in development is the introduction of Wero at the point of sale. In the future, customers will also be able to pay with Wero in brick-and-mortar retail.
