Mobile payments in Belgium: a promising future

The second edition of the EPI European Payment Barometer 2025 was compiled by Kantar, with over 4,000 respondents from Belgium, France, Germany and the Netherlands. The picture is clear: mobile payments face a promising future in Belgium.
User adoption accelerating

54 percent of Belgians use contactless payments at least once a week via their smart devices. 37 percent use mobile payment apps at least once a week.
Online payments

42 percent of respondents prefer digital payment methods for e commerce. 36 percent use mobile payment apps, at least once a week.
Classic methods remain relevant: 47 percent prefer paying by card.
The willingness to use digital payments is increasing: among those who have not yet used mobile payment apps, 29 percent say they would like to do so in the future 9 percent with firm intention.
In-store payments

Paying contactless in store, for example with a mobile payment app, is widespread in Belgium, where 54 percent of consumers use contactless payment via smart device at least once a week. More than one in three Belgian people use a payment app like Payconiq at least once a week.
Trust & perception

Belgians are enthusiastic about the future of payments. Half believe mobile payment apps will remain a complementary option to existing payment methods, while 41 percent believe they will become the norm.
Trust is high: 76 percent perceive mobile payments as easy, 67 percent as secure and 75 percent see them as affordable.
65 percent of Belgians are willing to use Wero, which is widely seen as a complementary payment option that embodies Europe’s ambition for greater payment sovereignty and convenience.
