N26 expands instant payment offer with introduction of Wero

Berlin, 11 August 2026 – N26 today launched Wero, the digital wallet and instant payment solution developed by the European Payments Initiative (EPI), directly within the N26 app. The new feature enables customers in Germany and France to send and receive money in seconds using only a phone number or email address, removing the need to share or enter an IBAN.

Instant, IBAN-free transfers have been a core N26 feature for over a decade within its own user base, helping N26 customers across Europe navigate fragmented domestic payment schemes with instant, frictionless transfers. Having further expanded its offers in this area over the years, the introduction of Wero takes this familiar experience further by opening this up to recipients outside the N26 ecosystem.

By embedding Wero into the N26 app’s native transfer flow, customers will be able to benefit from a single European payment standard that offers a fast, secure and independent alternative for daily digital transactions, with the ability to send and receive funds instantly from individuals who don't hold an N26 account, with no bank details or separate app required. Powered by SEPA Instant and the Wero network, transfers arrive in the recipient's bank account in under 10 seconds, any time of day.

"Instant payments without an IBAN have been a core N26 feature since our inception. With Wero, we’re extending this seamless experience to the broader European banking ecosystem, bringing the simplicity N26 customers already know to even more people.”

Daniel Lappas

Chief Product and Business Officer, N26

Wero is available to eligible N26 customers in Germany and France, with a progressive rollout to further markets planned for the future.
