PSA prepares issuing support for Wero in Austria and Germany

Austrian transaction service provider (PSA) implements the pan-European payment solution Wero developed by the European Payments Initiative (EPI) and supports banks with comprehensive services for connection.

Vienna/Brussels, 23 January 2026 – PSA Payment Services Austria GmbH (PSA) is now preparing Issuing Support services for Wero for banks in Austria and Germany. This creates the technical and operational prerequisites to enable banks in both markets to connect efficiently to Wero, the digital wallet developed by EPI and, in the next step, to the entire European market.

Supported by 14 major European banks and two leading payment service acquirers, Wero is a European unified mobile payment service, offering a simple, secure, and real-time account-based payment solution and aiming to establish a unified, sovereign European alternative in payments alongside international providers.

“As a payment infrastructure partner, we see it as our responsibility to provide banks with a future-proof infrastructure for innovative payment solutions and thus actively contribute to strengthening a sovereign European payments ecosystem. PSA’s services will be available to all customers wishing to use Wero and will address key requirements related to implementation – from technical integration and regulatory compliance through to ongoing operational support."

Harald Flatscher

Co-CEO of PSA

“ We are very pleased to see PSA enabling Austrian and German banks to offer Wero as an innovative, secure and real-time payment method to their customers, significantly strengthening Wero’s reach and accessibility. This collaboration is a concrete step in scaling a sovereign European payment solution and allowing Wero to resonate even more widely across Europe, for the benefit of both consumers and merchants.”

Martina Weimert

CEO of EPI
