EPI announces the integration of Wero as a payment solution online with Ahold Delhaize[1]and Veepee
Brussels, March 3rd, 2026- European Payments Initiative (EPI), the pan-European initiative to create a sovereign and unified payment alternative for Europe, today announces the deployment of Wero as an ecommerce solution to enable online payments at merchants in Belgium and announces the first Belgian merchants already accepting Wero to pay for purchases on their websites.

After instant peer-to-peer transfers, Wero's more than 50 million European users - (51,8M) - will now be able to pay for their online purchases to Belgian merchants accepting this payment method that is now part of Europeans’ daily lives. Belgium is the second market to effectively enable online payments through Wero after Germany, which was launched late 2025. This new feature comes in addition to invoice payments and peer-to-peer transfers in Belgium.
This launch comes at a time when Belgian consumers are increasingly embracing digital payments. According to the EPI Payments Barometer 2025 [2] conducted by Kantar among 1,000 respondents in Belgium, 65% of Belgians say they want to use Wero to pay, with 20% stating they are certain they will do so. In addition, 42% already mainly use digital methods for their online purchases, highlighting the strong relevance of Wero’s ecommerce rollout.
For its debut as a commercial payment mean, Wero as an ecommerce solution is now deployed and powered by ING, KBC and BNP Paribas Fortis in Belgium. In the coming weeks Belfius will follow, and a progressive integration in H2 2026 with other banks, including Argenta, Bank Van Breda, Beobank, Bunq, Crelan, Keytrade Bank, Nagelmackers, Revolut, and vdk bank, will also enable P2P and ecommerce transactions with Wero. Other banks enabling online payments by Wero will be announced at a later stage.
Among the first merchants to express their intention to activate Wero as an e-commerce payment solution in Belgium, include Ahold Delhaize, Bpost, Just Russel, LIDL, Pairi Daiza, Parfum Dreams. They are joining the first names announced earlier in Germany as Air Europa, Decathlon, Dott, Eventim, Veepee. They should enable their customers to complete transactions easily and intuitively directly through Wero throughout 2026.
"Across Europe, banks, payment providers and merchants are actively building together a secure and truly sovereign payment solution, made by Europeans for Europeans. The launch of Wero's ecommerce solution in Belgium, and soon in France, Luxembourg and Netherlands, marks another important milestone in our way to accomplish this together. We acknowledge the enthusiasm of Europeans, whether they are users or merchants, for Wero, as it demonstrates the need for a European alternative to international payment systems.”
Martina Weimert, CEO of EPI.
Designed as an alternative to international payment systems, Wero offers Europeans a secure and seamless mobile payment solution. The Barometer also shows that payment behaviors are structurally evolving[3]: 41% of Belgians believe mobile payment apps will become the norm, while among younger consumers, adoption momentum is particularly strong, with 57% of under-25s declaring they are certain they will adopt such solutions.
The European Payments Initiative (EPI) is supported by 16 European banks and payment service providers (acquirers) and continues to expand the integration of its payment solution, Wero, with new banking partners. EPI now counts more than 25 members – with 30 more to come - in Europe, including banks acting on the consumer side and acquirers operating on the merchant side.
In Belgium, the acquirers and partners currently supporting Wero include Worldline and Buckaroo - working with merchants, as well as partners like Doccle and POM – along with Mollie and Stripe among others. Additional acquirers and partners will be announced at a later stage.
In 2026, three other markets will also launch Wero in ecommerce: France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, where the migration of the iDEAL solution to Wero has just started.

"Launching Wero for e‑commerce in Belgium is a major step forward. This is how we build trust, adoption and a truly European alternative for online payments.”

This allows us to make it even easier and faster for our customers to pay merchants via Wero. By integrating Wero into KBC/CBC Mobile, we are reinforcing our commitment to delivering a unified and reliable payment experience for our customers. This integration ensures consistency in how people pay — whether among friends, online or at merchants — while supporting the broader industry shift toward a harmonised European way of paying. For merchants, a trusted and recognisable payment solution enhances customer confidence to use Wero at any time and any place.”
Lien Robijns, Head of Payments at KBC
Wero benefits for merchants and for users
Thanks to EPI's 100% API-based infrastructure, merchants will benefit from a simplified onboarding process. Wero will allow merchants to easily connect with consumers in any participating market in Europe, through a solution developed by and for Europeans, while users will enjoy a frictionless cross-border payment experience.
“Our priority is to make new payment methods easy to activate and reliable at scale. With Wero for e-commerce, Worldline strengthens its digital payments proposition and enables merchants to offer European shoppers a seamless checkout experience, without additional set-up or operational effort. Merchants can add Wero while keeping day-to-day operations running as usual, with immediate confirmation of successful payments and simplified reconciliation. We’re proud to have enabled the first Belgian Wero e-commerce payment for the Red Cross.”
Joachim Goyvaerts, CEO of Worldline Belgium
In the long term, Wero will make it possible to make online payments, in-store payments, but also to pay for subscriptions and offer value-added services such as the integration of merchants' loyalty programs. Transactions will gradually cover both simple and complex cases such as payment according to use or in several instalments to cover all market needs.
