At NRF Europe 2026, EPI announces that Wero has expanded to in-store payments in Belgium, marking a new step in its expansion across European retail.

Paris, September 16th, 2026 - As NRF Europe 2026 (15-17 Sept in Paris, France) explores “The Next Now” – the transformations moving from future ambition into retail reality – European Payments Initiative (EPI) showcases what that transition looks like in payments. Two years after its launch for person-to-person payments, Wero is expanding further into commerce, driven by growing e-commerce adoption and its first selected in-store use cases. Over 48,000 merchants across Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands have already processed Wero transactions, both online and in physical stores.

Wero gains ground across European commerce

From sending money between individuals to shopping online, paying recurring bills and increasingly paying in physical stores, Wero is progressively bringing these experiences together within one European wallet. In Germany, Wero is already available for online payments at merchants including Decathlon, dm, Eventim, and Lidl. France is following the same trajectory, with Air France, Decathlon, Fnac Darty and Orange recently confirming their adoption of Wero, while Sosh customers can already use it to pay their invoices. Building on this expanding merchant base, Wero is extending into more everyday payment situations, including its first in-store integrations.

Wero moves in-store in Belgium

Building on the availability of person-to-person and e-commerce payments in Belgium, Wero is progressively expanding in-store. Belgian payment provider Payworld joins the growing number of payment providers enabling Wero acceptance among Belgian merchants. The integration will be demonstrated at the EPI booth throughout NRF Europe, allowing consumers to pay directly from their bank account by scanning a Wero QR code displayed on a Payworld payment terminal.

This integration further expands the network of payment providers and merchants supporting Wero in Belgium. It marks another concrete step in Wero’s progressive in-store rollout, with availability set to grow as more payment providers and merchants integrate the solution.

Following its launch earlier this month, Wero is progressively expanding in Luxembourg throughout September. By the end of the month, Luxembourg will become another market where Wero covers its full range of currently available use cases, spanning person-to-person, e-commerce, invoice and in-store payments. More than 2,000 merchants are expected to accept Wero by the end of the month, up from around 600 today. Existing Payconiq QR codes on invoices and in stores will remain usable through Wero until the end of the year to ensure a smooth transition.

An ecosystem preparing what comes next

Beyond these first developments in Belgium and Luxembourg, NRF Europe illustrates the broader mobilisation under way across the European payment acceptance ecosystem.

At EPI’s booth and across the show, EPI members and technology partners will demonstrate how Wero could work with existing payment terminals and electronic cash registers. These include QR-based payment journeys and technical proofs of concept exploring potential future contactless account-to-account payments.

Conducted in test environments, the proofs of concept do not represent commercial launches but illustrate how existing retail infrastructure could support Wero’s future expansion at the point of sale.

Wero is already available in specific physical-payment environments in Germany, including EV charging. Broader point-of-sale availability in France and Germany is planned progressively from 2027 onwards.

The Next Now’ resonates particularly strongly with where Wero is today. What was on our roadmap is progressively becoming reality. Consumers are already paying with Wero online, and Belgium provides a concrete example of Wero moving further into the physical store. At the same time, across NRF we can see an ecosystem already preparing what comes next. This collective mobilisation is is essential to turning a European payment ambition into an everyday European payment solution.
